Will has organised a Guest teacher John Looker known as Azzey doing a Cuban workshop with Rumba styling as well as an LA workshop. (75 mins each) on the 27th of March at 3:30pm, £5/£4 students or £8/£6 for both classes. SPICE NIGHT – FRI 1st April

Latin Quarter Spice night on Fri 1st April, 8pm till 12.30am at The Chamber Suite, Panmure St, Dundee DD1 1ED a night of latin dancing ( much like a normal Latin Quarter night but with the added SPICE of performances from the Spice countries). So far we have the brilliant AFRODISIAC and others TBC. The AFRODISIAC group are from all over Angus and have been together for over 10 years, they play West African rhythms, including the occasional bit of singing and dancing too.

There’s a free salsa class at 8.15pm and a raffle too. Tickets on the door, £5/ £4 ( stu). Money raised goes to the Azul Wasi project in Peru for Street children. Salsa Celtica in Dundee – 30th April at The Rep

5 days to go !!! until Charity band night at The Apex- Sat 12th Feb 8 till 12.30am

REMINDER ! 5 days to go to the CHARITY BAND night at The Apex Hotel, Victoria Dock Road, Dundee, DD1 3JP, Tickets available with a £2 discount if paid in advance from Grouchos ( Dundee) or from Sarah at classes this Tue between 6.15 &10pm ( at Chamber Suite ) or this Thursday (6 till 7pm) ( at Mono, Dundee uni ). Otherwise tickets are £12 or £9 (stu) on the door on the night. If folks are coming together you can reserve a table for between 8 & 12 people by emailing sarahbrox@gmail.com before Friday.

Doors open at 8pm, SON al SON , a GREAT Cuban band will entertain you in style playing 2 sets starting around 9pm, with a beginners salsa class at 8.15pm. There are themed cocktails available at £4.95 each and bar snacks too, nachos with meat chilli & cheese (£4.95) or veggie chilli & cheese (£4), bowl of dorritos ( 60p) & other snacks ! Theres a raffle with some great prizes, £20 restaurant voucher, Ice skating tickets, DCA vouchers and much more and some exclusive CUBAN goods for auction. SON AL SON, Cuban music band are bringing a little bit of Havana to you. For new comers to Latin Quarter band events there’s a beginners salsa class at 8.15pm to get the night going then Son al Son will play 2 sets starting around 9pm. NEW Beginners Salsa classes starting this week

BEGINNERS Charity Salsa classes – January 2011, Still places in all classes just come along on the 18th or the 27th Jan, or email first with any queries.

2 NEW beginners salsa classes, 2 different styles, Entry to new beginners classes only in first 2 weeks or starting to join. Please come 10 min early for first class to register. See classses page on website for directions .

1) Chamber Suite classes in NEW YEAR.

Classes start Tue 18th Jan at Chamber Suite, Panmure St, Dundee ( behind McManus galleries).

NEW Beginners 10 week class Cuban style salsa 6.45-7.30pm (this will lead onto learning the Cuban wheel dance, Rueda).

Improvers/intermediate cross body salsa class 7.30-8.15pm

Cuban Rueda Improvers/ Intermed class 8.15-9.15pm

Beginners Cuban class course £25 for 10 week block ( pay for block at 1st or 2nd Class), or £4 per class paid weekly. Other 2 classes £4 per class, or multi- class deal £15 for 5 classes if paid in advance per class course.

2) NEW Beginners salsa classes ( cross body style) starting on Thursday Jan 27th at MONO, Dundee University Union building, downstairs, 6-7pm. 10 week block £30 ( stu), £32 otherwise. Charity Valentines Latin Ball- Sat 12th February 2011

LATIN QUARTER presents a CHARITY Valentines Latin Ball at The Apex City Quay Hotel &
Spa, 1 West Victoria Dock Road, Dundee, DD1 3JP on Saturday February 12th
2011 with Son Al Son, Cuban music band. Doors open at 8pm on till 1am, come along
and feel the Cuban spirit with a live band, free beginners Salsa class at
8.15pm. There will be a Raffle on the night and a dance competition.
Tickets £12 ( students £9) on the door or £2 DISCOUNT for tickets
purchased in advance from sarahbrox@gmail.com or Grouchos (Dundee), tickets on sale
from 15th Jan 2011. Money raised goes to Azul Wasi street children project near Cusco, Peru.

Information about the band, Son al Son was formed in 2008. Its line-up is made up of musicians from Cuba, Ricardo Fernandes Pompa,(Lead Vocals and Bongos) Eric Alfonso (Congas) and from Scotland, Bob Thomson (Bass) and Lorne Cowieson (Trumpet)with Lino Rocha on Vocals and Guiro and Simon Gall on Piano and Vocals.

As the name suggests, Son al Son play son, a style of music made popular in 1920’s Havana and more recently in the film “Buena Vista Social Club”. To this day, songs like Chan Chan, El Cuarto Del Tula and Dos Gardenias are played in cafes and bars across Cuba, Son al Son have recreated this sound to bring a little bit of Havana to you. Son al Son play a lively set of traditional Cuban songs guaranteed to get your feet tapping and out of your seat in no time, Gozar! Enjoy!.
